Yeah, but that's Buffalo... which is in a smaller metro region than Vancouver. Even the combined Rochester and Buffalo metro areas are smaller than Vancouver's.

On a totally tangential note, did you know that Batavia is considered as being in Rochester's metro area and not Buffalo's?

I do think the "crossing the river" thing is an issue like Dave says.

Many NYers would not bother crossing the Hudson River to go to a Devils or Nets game (although they would for the Giants or Jets).

And few people who live in the city of New York would venture out to Long Island for a sporting event because that involves a car and paying for parking when it is easier to take mass transit into the city for games played in Manhattan.

Vancouver is likely surviving in large part to the 27 corporate partners they list:

C&D Logistics and Tim Hortons have their logos on the floor so there's some bigger money from them. They have printers and hotels listed so while that may not be cold, hard cash it could help with keeping some operating costs down.

And if anyone wants to hop on board, here's how -- http://www.stealthlax.com/become-a-stealth-partner/ and http://www.stealthlax.com/sp-datastore/media-files/2016%20Stealth%20Partnership%20Opportunity%20Guide_low.pdf

So if the Stealth are paying almost next to nothing in rent and are getting monetary help from sponsorships/partnerships, they could likely at least break even on the balance sheet with 3k in average attendance.

i know NE has mostly sponsors that are restaurants within the complex but they have some big time names like Coca Cola and Yuengling and Bacardi

It also helps the Stealth that the LEC is really strong and enthusiastic on promoting the team and lacrosse in general. While the crowds may be disappointing, a team owner probably could not ask for a better arena 'landlord' than the LEC folks. The off-floor environment at LEC could be why the Stealth ownership are willing to weather out the small crowds in the hopes they do pick up, because they certainly would not have such a positive relationship at the downtown Canucks Arena or PNE/Pacific Coliseum. Canucks Arena would only work with Canucks ownership while the PNE is indirectly an extension of the City of Vancouver and that means city money could be on the line if unpaid loses were incurred.

The stealth pretty much at the low end of a tax bracket system. Right now with 3k in attendance and low facility cost and sponsors they don't have much room to grow in Langley. They could ride this out and possibly get to 5k in attendance but they'd ultimately stagnant and lose fans as they are not legitimate compared to everyone else (like Carolina hurricanes).

Either sell out to the Canucks or move to a bigger place closer to Vancouver like the Pacific coliseum. This is a higher bracket with more costs but the out reach could make them very profitable.

Either way the NLL want to grow and the stealth has to do something if they want to stay in Vancouver.

So how long to sponsors fork over big money for a 3000 member fan base?

Was thinking the same thing......and also wondering whether the cost per square foot of turf add was in the order of $6.38

Tracing back on NLL's website the stealth franchise in Vancouver has never hit much over 4k. Every year in Vancouver the attendance shrinks. Currently the average nearly breaks 3k and the season is half way over.

If they ever drop below 3k they will relocate. At this rate I think it's either sell to Canucks or move to Philly.

... or Edmonton. I do believe that the Oilers would be happy buying a relocated franchise with an established team than ponying up $5M for an expansion likely to have bad performance the first few years. The Stealth, armed with fresh capital and a good back office with sports experience, would likely get better and be a serious contender quickly in Edmonton.

Not a crazy idea, really, but imagine the reaction of the Edmontonians who are suddenly cheering for Duch and Beers and Richards and guys they've hated for years.

That's the big question. When the sponsors go, then the team is done in Langley.

If it won't work in Langley, and the Canucks don't pony up, maybe they could cross the strait of Georgia and set up shop in Victoria. They could change the name to Vancouver Island Stealth!

  17. Maybe if they ever have a competitive team people would start showing up....

I'm all for it as long as they don't use the stealth logo. It's still close enough for the guys that live in Vancouver area. 1h flight or 12h drive.

Edmonton has a lot of booming labour jobs so the players have something to do in the off season for good money.

I don't see Victoria working due to the travel costs. Sure they would possibly draw more but Victoria is off the beaten path for direct flights from the US apart from Seattle. Everything would have to go connector via Vancouver or Calgary or Seattle. BC Ferries is a costly bitch to rely on - which is the alternative from Vancouver.

The Stealth logo gets changed with every move anyway...
I would not mind a new team name to give it a fresh start.
