Timing would be right on announcing a pro team. If they are doing that, it must also mean that the league has worked something out with Curt Styres.

I like that they're having the announcement at a bar. :)

I think they may be reconsidering that name now that the supporters group for their new Canadian Premier League team calls themselves "Privateers 1882".

Wasn't the CFL team also rumored to be the Privateers?

Just my thoughts on it, but Highlanders sounds way to much like Islanders.

    T
They did a name the team poll and will release the name on grey cup week end. Most likely will be schooners though

When was the last time Canadian Mens Soccer was attached to the word Premier. The currently have 3 players playing in a major top flight 14 if you count MLS as a top flight league (most do not)

I don't think that supporters clubs trademark their names usually. Perhaps this one is different.

so wait... the thought here is that the name of a booster club to a minor league soccer team, not the actual soccer team, is the reason why the NLL team would want to change their name?? WHAT WORLD AM I LIVING IN?!

BUT THE FANS CALLED DIBS ON THE NAME FIRST!

It's not about the trademark. It's about the usage of the name in general. If you know anything about soccer supporters groups (which I admit don't know very much about), is that they take themselves very seriously and almost consider themselves as their own team at times. If you name a team in the same city the same as a brand new supporters group that established itself first, there may be some backlash from fans.

One thing also to consider is that Privateers is most likely not the ONLY option the team has. Just because they trademarked a single name doesn't mean they are 100% going to use it. We're acting like it is just a fact that they are going with that name, which it is not.
